Call to Worship: Tenebrae (Latin for "shadows" or "darkness") is a service of worship for Good Friday before Easter Sunday. Tenebrae is characterized by a series of Scripture readings and meditations done in stages while candles are gradually extinguished to symbolize the growing darkness not only of Jesus’ death but of hopelessness in the world without God. The service ends in darkness with a final candle, the Christ candle, extinguished, symbolizing the death of Jesus.
Tonight we will follow Jesus along the way as he journeys from praying in Gethsemane to his death on the cross. We enter this journey with the penitent’s prayer, which we say inwardly:
“Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my thoughts. See if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” (Psalm 139:23-24)
Call to Worship
We pray together:
Almighty God, your son Jesus Christ was lifted high upon the cross so that he might draw the whole world to himself. Grant that we, who glory in his death for our salvation, may also glory in his call to take up our cross and follow him; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The readings are from the scriptural “Stations of the Cross” and, with the hymns, will now progress unannounced. Each reader will come forward and after reading will extinguish one candle until at the end the Christ candle is put out. We meditate as the readings take place and we remain seated for the hymns and then leave the sanctuary in silence.
