CALL TO WORSHIP

*Hymn 103 Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise+

1. Immortal, invisible, God only wise,
in light inaccessible hid from our eyes,
most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,
almighty, victorious, thy great name we praise.

2. Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light,
nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might;
thy justice like mountains high soaring above
thy clouds which are fountains of goodness and love.

3 To all, life thou givest, to both great and small;
in all life thou livest, the true life of all;
we blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree,
and wither and perish, but naught changeth thee.

4. Thou reignest in glory; thou dwellest in light;
thine angels adore thee, all veiling their sight;
all laud we would render: O help us to see
’tis only the splendor of light hidest thee.

WORDS: Walter Chalmers Smith, 1867.

I will rejoice for he has made me glad,

He has made me glad, he has made me glad,
I will rejoice for he has made me g l a d--,
He has made me glad, he has made me glad,

Majesty(Sing once)
Majesty…Majesty, worship his majesty;
Unto Jesus be all glory, honor, and praise.

CHILDREN’S TIME

SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM (Uche Amari Anderson-Edwards Mickles at 8:30 and Isaiah Carvalho Armel Williams at 11:00)

Brothers and Sisters in Christ; through the Sacrament of Baptism, we are initiated into Christ’s holy Church.  We are incorporated into God’s mighty acts of salvation and given new birth through water and the Spirit. All this is God’s gift, offered to us without price.

Uche Amari Anderson-Edwards Mickles/Isaiah Carvalho Armel Williams, has been brought for baptism by his parents, and family today. We ask them to respond to these questions as a testimony to their faith, and I ask the congregation to pledge to help them in their task.

To the family, I ask these questions:
On behalf of the whole Church, I ask you: Do you renounce the spiritual forces of wickedness, reject the evil powers of this world, and repent of your sin?  I do.

Do you accept the freedom and power God gives you to resist evil, injustice, and oppression in whatever forms they present themselves? I do.

Do you confess Jesus Christ as your Savior, put your whole trust in his grace, and promise to serve him as your Lord, in union with the Church which Christ has opened to people of all ages, nations, and races?  I do.

Will you nurture this child in Christ’s holy Church, that by your teaching and example he may be guided to accept God’s grace for himself, and profess his faith openly, and to lead a Christian life? I will.

Now to the congregation I ask:
Do you, as Christ’s body, the Church, reaffirm both your rejection of sin and your commitment to Christ?  We do.

Will you nurture one another in the Christian faith and life and include these persons and all the children in this church, in your care?
With God’s help we will proclaim the good news and live according to the example of Christ.  We will surround these persons with a community of love and forgiveness, that they may grow in their service to others.  We will pray for them, that they may be true disciples who walk in the way that leads to life.

Let us pray Eternal Father: When nothing existed but chaos, you swept across the dark waters and brought forth light.  In the days of Noah you saved those on the ark through water.  After the flood you set in the clouds a rainbow.  When you saw your people as slaves in Egypt, you led them to freedom through the sea.  Their children you brought through the Jordan to the land which you promised.

In the fullness of time you sent Jesus, nurtured in the water of a womb.  He was baptized by John and anointed by your Spirit.  He called his disciples to share in the baptism of his death and resurrection and to make disciples of all nations.
Pour out your Holy Spirit, to bless this gift of water and Uche/Isaiah who receive it, to wash away his sins and clothe him in righteousness throughout his life, that, dying and being raised with Christ, he may share in his final victory.

Bless the home of Uche/Isaiah and, give wisdom and affection to his parents, along with understanding and guidance, and, most of all, build up the love which conquers all evil and instills the grace to lead a Christian life. We ask in Jesus’ name.

All praise to you, Eternal Father, through your Son Jesus Christ, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns forever. Amen.

Uche Amari/Isaiah Carvalho Armel, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen

The Holy Spirit work within you, that being born through water and the Spirit, you may be a faithful disciple of Jesus Christ.  Amen.

Now it is our joy to welcome our new brother in Christ.

Through baptism you are incorporated by the Holy Spirit into God’s new creation and made to share in Christ’s royal priesthood.  We are all one in Christ Jesus. With joy and thanksgiving, we welcome you a member of the family of Christ.

*HYMN When Mothers of Salem+

1 When mothers of Salem their children brought to Jesus,
The stern disciples drove them back and bade them depart;
But Jesus saw them ere they fled, and sweetly smiled, and kindly said,
"Suffer the children to come unto Me.

2 How kind was our Savior to bid those children welcome!
But there are many thousands who have never heard His name;
Dear Savior, hear us when we pray, that they may hear thee to them say:
"Suffer the children to come unto Me."

3 And soon may the heathen of every tribe and nation
Fulfill Thy blessed word, and cast their idols all away;
O shine upon them from above, and show Thyself a God of love;
Teach them dear Savior, to come unto Thee.

WORDS: William M. Hutchings, 1827-1876 MUSIC: Crescentius Koromdel

MEN’S ANTHEM

Jesus Loves Me This I Know

1 Jesus loves me! this I know, for the Bible tells me so.
Little ones to him belong; they are weak, but he is strong.
Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me! The Bible tells me so.

2 Jesus loves me, this I know, as he loved so long ago,
taking children on his knee, saying, "Let them come to me."
Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me! The Bible tells me so.

3 Jesus loves me still today, walking with me on my way,
wanting as a friend to give, light and love to all who live.
Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me! The Bible tells me so.

PRAYER HYMN 407 Close to Thee

Thou my everlasting portion,
more than friend or life to me,
all along my pilgrim journey,
Savior, let me walk with thee.
Close to thee, close to thee,
close to thee, close to thee,
all along my pilgrim journey,
Savior, let me walk with thee.

2. Not for ease or worldly pleasure,
nor for fame my prayer shall be;
gladly will I toil and suffer,
only let me walk with thee.
Close to thee, close to thee,
close to thee, close to thee,
gladly will I toil and suffer,
only let me walk with thee.

3 Lead me through the vale of shadows,
bear me o'er life's fitful sea;
then the gate of life eternal
may I enter, Lord, with thee.
Close to thee, close to thee,
close to thee, close to thee,
then the gate of life eternal
may I enter, Lord, with thee.

PRAYER OF INTERCESSION and THE LORD’S PRAYER.

Our Father, who art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy Name; Thy kingdom come;
Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven:
Give us this day our daily bread;
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil:
For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory,
For ever and ever. Amen.

SERMON     How God Comforts   Pastor David Range

*HYMN OF SENDING FORTH 419 I Am Thine O Lord+

I am Thine, O Lord, I have heard thy voice,
And it told thy love to me;
But I long to rise in the arms of faith,
And be closer drawn to Thee.
Draw me nearer, nearer, blessed Lord,
To the cross where thou hast died;
Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer, blessed Lord,
To thy precious, bleeding side.

2 Consecrate me now to thy service, Lord,
By the power of grace divine;
Let my soul look up with a steadfast hope,
And my will be lost in thine.
Draw me nearer, nearer, blessed Lord,
To the cross where thou hast died;
Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer, blessed Lord,
To thy precious, bleeding side.

3 O, the pure delight of a single hour
That before thy throne I spend,
When I kneel in prayer, and with thee, my God,
I commune as friend with friend!
Draw me nearer, nearer, blessed Lord,
To the cross where thou hast died;
Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer, blessed Lord,
To thy precious, bleeding side.

4 There are depths of love that I cannot know
Till I cross the narrow sea;
There are heights of joy that I may not reach
Till I rest in peace with Thee.
Draw me nearer, nearer, blessed Lord,
To the cross where thou hast died;
Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer, blessed Lord,
To thy precious, bleeding side.

WORDS: Fanny J. Crosby, 1875 MUSIC: William H. Doane, 1875
